What is Kanagawa Prefecture

Kamakura was the home of the Kamakura shogunate during the ancient Kamakura period. Later, during the Edo period, the prefecture's Tokyo Bay coastal area developed along with the construction of the Tokaido, the route to Edo where the Edo shogunate were located. The Port of Yokohama was opened to overseas trade in the last years of the Tokugawa shogunate and grew around the Tokyo Bay seafront during the Meiji period.
