Hokkaido Prefecture is a large island in Northern Japan where the cold winters are long and harsh. You get a sense of the vastness of nature in the region of Shiretoko, registered as the World Heritage Site in July 2005 in recognition of its abundant remaining natural environment. The prefecture produces a lot of seafood, vegetables and dairy products renowned for their flavor. The population is concentrated in Sapporo.
